The men’s singles competition at Flushing Meadows opened with rapid-fire intensity across the outer courts, where early-round momentum often dictates who survives the grueling fortnight. Spearheading the early victories was China’s Wu Yibing, who delivered a courageous 7-6(2), 6-2, 7-5 victory over Australia’s Adam Walton in a match defined by high-wire baseline rallies and tight margins.
Wu was forced to weather an early barrage from Walton, who brought heavy serving to the hard courts. But when the opening set headed into a tiebreak, Wu found another gear, taking advantage of short balls to claim the set before dictating play throughout the second. Walton launched a desperate comeback push in the third, but Wu remained unflappable under pressure, saving five of seven break points and breaking late at 5-5 to lock up a straight-sets triumph.
Joining Wu in the winner's circle was Poland's Kamil Majchrzak, who produced one of the most efficient opening-round performances on the men's side. Facing dangerous big-server Hamad Medjedovic, Majchrzak put on a serve-and-volley clinics, firing 13 aces and winning 84% of his first-serve points without surrendering a single service game. Majchrzak swept through Medjedovic 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in under two hours. To complete the early wave, Spain's Daniel Mérida Aguilar upset Márton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, taking full advantage of Fucsovics' double-fault struggles to advance to Round 2.
