Arsenal’s flawless start to the 2026/27 campaign came to a crashing halt on Saturday as a ruthless Brighton & Hove Albion side produced a scintillating 3-0 victory at the American Express Stadium. Seeking an eighth consecutive win to start the season across all competitions, the Gunners were completely overrun by Fabian Hürzeler’s relentless pressing machine, failing to cope with the speed, physicality, and clinical execution of the Seagulls.
The tone was set early as Brighton pressed Arsenal deep into their own defensive third. David Raya was forced into action within the opening six minutes, tipping Charalampos Kostoulas' low strike around the post. The pressure eventually told in the 31st minute when veteran midfielder Pascal Groß picked up possession outside the box and unleashed a precise right-footed drive that struck the inside of Raya’s near post and ricocheted in to break the deadlock.
Arsenal briefly threatened an equalizer on the stroke of halftime. A swift counter-attack released Bukayo Saka inside the area, but his off-balance effort was saved by Bart Verbruggen. Just 15 seconds later, Brighton landed a devastating counter-punch. Verbruggen immediately launched the ball upfield, where Kostoulas strided forward and buried a 25-yard rocket into the bottom corner to send the home support into raptures before the interval.
Any hopes of a second-half revival for the Gunners were extinguished in the 57th minute. Pascal Groß turned provider, floating an inswinging corner toward the far post where Spanish midfielder Chema Andrés towered over a static Arsenal defense to head home his first Brighton goal. Arteta turned to substitute Viktor Gyökeres to spark an attack, but Kai Havertz's one-on-one attempt was thwarted by Verbruggen in Arsenal’s best chance of a dismal afternoon.
The 3-0 result sees Brighton elevate themselves to third place in the Premier League table, moving within two points of the Gunners. For Mikel Arteta, the heavy loss marks a stern reality check after four consecutive demanding away fixtures in under two weeks, forcing the North Londoners to regroup ahead of a busy autumn schedule.
