Nagoya: Qatar will officially begin its journey towards hosting the 21st Asian Games in Doha in 2030 on Sunday when the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Flag is handed over to the Qatari delegation during the Closing Ceremony of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

The handover will mark the official transition from Aichi-Nagoya to Doha as the next host of Asia’s biggest multi-sport event.

The curtain will come down on Aichi-Nagoya 2026 today following 15 days of competition involving athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees. With the Asian Games Flag passing to Doha, attention will now turn to preparations for the Games’ return to the Qatari capital in four years.

The flag handover carries particular significance for Qatar, coming exactly 20 years after Doha hosted the Asian Games for the first time in 2006.

It will also signal the beginning of a new phase of preparations as Qatar builds towards another edition of the continental sporting showpiece, drawing on its extensive experience in hosting major international competitions.

Doha 2030 preparations will build on Qatar’s established sporting infrastructure and its network of world-class venues, many of which have hosted major international events. Sustainability and the efficient use of existing facilities are also expected to remain key considerations as preparations gather pace.

During the Aichi-Nagoya Games, the Doha 2030 Asian Games Organising Committee delegation participated in the Observer Programme, using the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the organisational and operational requirements involved in staging the Asian Games.

The programme provided the Doha delegation with an opportunity to observe various aspects of Games operations in Japan and benefit from the experience of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 organisers.

Qatar is now set to build on the lessons gained in Japan as preparations accelerate for Doha 2030.

The return of the Asian Games to Doha will also provide an opportunity for Qatar to draw on the legacy of the 2006 edition while incorporating its experience from hosting a wide range of major sporting events over the past two decades.

Doha has since established itself as a regular host of international sporting competitions across multiple disciplines, providing the country with extensive expertise in event operations, venue management, athlete services and spectator experiences.

With the flag formally handed over today, the countdown to Doha 2030 will begin in earnest.

The next four years will see Qatar prepare to welcome Asia’s leading athletes back to Doha for what will be the second Asian Games hosted by the country.

The occasion will mark a new chapter in Qatar’s long-standing record of hosting major international sporting events, while reaffirming Doha’s role as a major destination for global and continental sports.
