The fixture got off to the worst possible start for Michael Carrick's visiting side. With barely 60 seconds on the clock, Atlético Madrid caught United cold when Pablo Barrios surged forward and slotted past Senne Lammens to break the deadlock. Stunned by the early setback, United slowly worked their way back into the encounter, absorbing heavy pressure while looking to exploit transition moments through Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford.
Despite finding themselves behind, United engineered promising opportunities either side of halftime. Bruno Fernandes came agonizingly close to leveling the score in the 72nd minute when his brilliant curling effort from a well-worked corner routine rattled against the crossbar. Moments earlier, Julián Alvarez had also struck the woodwork for the hosts, keeping the margin at a single goal as both managers turned to their benches to inject fresh energy.
The game’s decisive turning point arrived in the 74th minute. Following a VAR review for a challenge on Jonathan David as the forward raced through on goal, Leny Yoro was shown a straight red card, reducing Manchester United to ten men. Down a player, United's defensive shape was stretched as Atlético pressed home their numerical advantage.
The insurance goal arrived in the 79th minute through substitute Ademola Lookman. Capitalizing when Lammens could only parry a shot from David, Lookman reacted quickest inside the area to rifle home and make it 2-0. Despite late efforts from substitutes Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee, Jan Oblak and the disciplined Atlético defense held firm to secure a clean-sheet victory, leaving United empty-handed in their second European outing of the campaign.
