Leylah Fernandez captured her first title of the 2026 season with a commanding 7–5, 6–0 victory over Australia’s Talia Gibson in the final of the WTA 500 Singapore Tennis Open.
Entering the tournament as the sixth seed, the 24-year-old Canadian overcame an early trade of service breaks in a tightly contested opening set. Once Fernandez secured a late break at 6–5 to close out the first set, she took complete control of the match, winning nine consecutive games to wrap up the contest in one hour and 38 minutes. Fernandez was sharp on serve throughout the final set, winning over 81% of her first-serve points and converting six of her 12 break-point opportunities.
Fernandez’s championship run in Singapore was marked by remarkable consistency, dropping only one set across five matches. Her toughest test came in the quarter-finals, where she ousted top seed Mirra Andreeva before defeating French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska in a three-set semi-final battle.
The victory marks Fernandez’s sixth career WTA singles title and her second at the WTA 500 level, following her triumph at the D.C. Open in July 2025. Hard courts continue to be her premier surface, with all six of her career titles coming on the court type, including three during the WTA’s Asian swing. With the win, Fernandez jumps five places in the official WTA rankings to World No. 26 as she heads directly to Beijing for the WTA 1000 China Open.
