DOHA: Al Janoub Stadium will begin a new chapter in Qatar’s sporting legacy on August 27 when the iconic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venue officially opens its doors to basketball, hosting Qatar’s clash against China in the Asian qualifiers for the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.
The match, part of the fourth window of the Asian qualifiers, will mark the competitive debut of the newly transformed Al Janoub Arena and provide an important operational test exactly one year before the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 gets underway.
Beyond the action on court, the encounter will offer fans an early glimpse of the atmosphere and experience expected when the world’s leading basketball nations converge on Doha next year.
The 2027 tournament will be a landmark edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup, becoming the first to be hosted by an Arab country and in the Middle East and North Africa region.
It will also be the first edition staged entirely within a single city, with all matches taking place in Doha. The compact tournament concept will allow spectators to attend more than one match in a day, building on Qatar’s experience of delivering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
For the Qatar national team, the China encounter represents another significant step in preparations for the global showpiece.
Qatar finished second in Group D of the first round of the Asian qualifiers with 10 points, behind Lebanon, to advance to the second round despite already being guaranteed a World Cup place as hosts.
The national team will open the second round against China in Doha on August 27 before facing Japan and South Korea in home-and-away encounters during subsequent qualifying windows.
The matches are part of Qatar’s comprehensive preparation programme aimed at ensuring the national team reaches peak competitive readiness ahead of the World Cup. They will also provide opportunities for organisers to test venues, facilities and operational arrangements.
Admission to the Qatar-China match will be free, with the Organising Committee inviting basketball fans across the country to attend the historic occasion.
The game will be a major feature of the “One Year to Go” campaign, officially beginning the final 12-month countdown to the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.
Central to the occasion will be the transformation of Al Janoub Stadium from an outdoor football venue into a fully enclosed indoor basketball arena.
The innovative conversion represents another example of Qatar’s efforts to maximise the long-term value of infrastructure developed for major sporting events while preserving the architectural identity of its landmark venues.
Director General of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Organising Committee Dr. Ahmad Abdulla Al-Buenain said the China match represents an important milestone in preparations.
He said the encounter will provide organisers with an opportunity to assess Al Janoub Arena’s organisational and operational readiness, evaluate fan engagement with interactive experiences and accompanying activities, and strengthen Qatar’s preparations through a competitive test against one of Asia’s leading basketball nations.
“Al Janoub Arena is no longer simply a stage for competition; it is a living symbol of innovative legacy and sustainable venue development,” Dr. Al-Buenain said.
“The Qatar-China encounter will put its readiness firmly in the spotlight one year before the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027.”
He noted that the transformation of an open-air World Cup football stadium into a fully enclosed indoor arena represented an innovative engineering achievement.
“This experience confirms that Qatar is not only hosting major championships but setting new standards for sustainable sports infrastructure as a strategic asset supporting the country’s and the region’s long-term sporting development,” he added.
The transformation also reinforces Qatar’s broader approach to sporting legacy, demonstrating how venues created for one major championship can be adapted for future international events.
Having welcomed football supporters from around the globe during Qatar 2022, Al Janoub will now welcome basketball fans and some of the sport’s biggest stars, carrying Qatar’s major-event legacy from one World Cup to another.
